Subject: Beekeeping in Smallholder Associations

Dear Debra

I would like to introduce National Bee Supplies to your association as one of the UK's largest makers and suppliers of the finest quality bee hives, hive parts, frames and other associated beekeeping equipment. I have attached a newsletter that gives you a little more information about our business.

Here at National Bee Supplies we are very sympathetic to the ethos and values of Smallholding. We also take our responsibilities for the environment very seriously as the majority of our packaging is made from recycled packaging donated to us by local companies. Most off-cuts of our Western Red Cedar wood are bagged and used for kindling firewood and the extracted sawdust from our factory is made available for local farmers and smallholders to use. This is in keeping with our environmental credentials and our business has been vetted and approved by Trading Standards.

We appreciate that we all find ourselves in challenging times and National Bee Supplies would like to make an offer to your association members of a one-off offer per person of 10% discount off any of our wooden bee hives, hive parts, frames and our complete beginner's kits. Details of all these products can be found at our website, www.beekeeping.co.uk and can be ordered from us by telephoning Samantha in our showroom on 01837 54084 and quoting the code - SHA1. We offer free delivery to UK mainland addresses on all orders of £200 or over.

I hope this proves of some interest and would appreciate if you could circulate this to the members within your association for their benefit.

Many thanks for your help.

Best Regards
Mike Sylvester

LSSSC...goodbye PDF Print Email

Hello everyone,

This is just a quick email to say thank you and goodbye to you all.  As you know I will be stepping down from the position of membership secretary this AGM with  Andrew O'Shea having kindly stepped forward to take on the role.
Over the years I have really enjoyed being on the receiving end of many interesting emails full wanted items and things for sale.  I have spoken to countless new smallholders who are delighted to have found this group....a group full of kind and helpful people.
We will be having to move out of Tippings Lodge this September. and thankfully we will be able to keep some of our dexter cows at grazing not too far from our village for a few more years.
Best wishes to you all,
kind regards Debra and Dean Wiltshire

If you leave out the copper finings you can use the nettles for something else once you have boiled them, perhaps:

Fwd: Safeguarding our best and most versatile soils for food growing PDF Print Email

Hello...below is an email which may or may not be of interest to members...regards Debra

Dear Debra,

I'm trying to contact as many organisations as possible, which is why I'm now writing to smallholders (and related links) to invite everyone to sign and pass on my petition Safeguard our Soils, Mr. Pickles! which I launched in the New Year following advice from the CPRE and Soil Association, the full text of which is below. Would you like to sign this and pass on, please?

http://www.avaaz.org/en/petition/Safeguard_our_Soils_Mr_Pickles/?launch

'Safeguard our Soils, Mr. Pickles!

Why is agricultural land, described in one planning application as 'a mixture of 80% Grade 2 (very good quality) and 20% Subgrade 3b (good quality)', being developed? We need change before any more agricultural land is offered to/bought up by developers.

Who can make this happen?
Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Mr. Eric Pickles MP

Why is the petition important?
We must accept that Britain cannot rely on world food supplies because, as prices rise, Britain needs a stable, secure food supply, with short distance from field to plate.

Over the next 50 years, food and farming face the stark challenge of providing better nutrition for more people in spite of rapid environmental change, while cutting our diet’s impact on natural resources, ecosystems and the climate. This calls for changes in our eating habits, reductions in food waste and improvements in food production. We want to make sure organic and other agro ecological approaches are at the heart of efforts to achieve this.

It used to be the case in England that the grade of agricultural land was a prime consideration for planners and local authorities in allocating sites for development.

But changes to planning policy in the late 1980’s downgraded the importance of agricultural land classifications in planning, in response to the more globalised market for food that had developed and this level of attention to quality of land was no longer needed.

The DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) report http://randd.defra.gov.uk/Document.aspx?Document=9905_SP1501finalreport.pdf demonstrates that before the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF), Local Planning Authorities didn’t have the tools they need to protect our best agricultural land from development – and the NPPF has done nothing to improve planning policy to address this.

What is the text of my petition?
Because the present National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) policy does not amount to protection of Best and Most Versatile agricultural land (BMV) - merely a requirement to take it into account - I believe that there should be a specific direction in the NPPF to plan positively for the future use of BMV for benefits beyond food production. Areas covered should include increased biodiversity and an increased level of resilience for agriculture.

We really do need to maximise UK production sustainably, and not rely on world markets, and the loss of above average farmland should once more become a prime consideration in planning decisions.'

'Why is it possible for developers to build on our 'Best and Most Versatile agricultural land (BMV)' - because it's land that will never feed another mouth again.
The answer's in my petition, which I hope you'll sign -- it's called: Safeguard our Soils, Mr. Pickles!
To summarise for anyone else who hasn't been and signed the petition, it's worth doing. The aim of this is to stop the government allowing prime agricultural land to be bought by developers. It used to be the case that, when Britain supplied most of its own food, good quality land was kept for agricultural purposes, not housing/other buildings.
Please read more about it at this link, sign and pass on:
Or simply type Safeguard our Soils, Mr. Pickles! into your search engine'
